CARTING WHEAT

By Spot Lamont

“From our house at Oak Bank, which was built on high ground, we had a good view of the main road from Ongerup to Jerramungup.
It was a day of excitement for us kids when the Needilup farmers started the wheat carting to Ongerup Siding.
This was done by wagons and teams of horses as they had no railway. Most wagons carried about sixty seven bags of wheat although some carried eighty bags.
These wagons were pulled by teams of horses, usually eight horses to a team.

Farmers names that I remember who carted wheat from Needilup to Ongerup were :
Pocock, Calder, McHardy, Brown's (Bill and Charlie), Bob Neill, Sparks, Fosters, Hegarty, Garnett, Holmes, Wilkinson, French and later Wise.
The Needilup farmers could only carry three loads a week. After unloading their wheat, the teamsters camped at Tarbunkenup dam for the night. They left early next morning for home where they would load up ready for their next trip”.
